Last workday of 2024 is in the books

The last official workday of 2024 is now in the books ending with more progress on the “Grandma Line” and repair of a leak with the gray container extension. The crew working on the “Grandma Line” consisted of John T., Wes, Norm, and Robby. Together they finished nearly 70 feet of track leaving a switch and nearly 100 feet of track until the long awaited “Grandma Line” is finished. The next step for the project includes installing a retaining wall and a curved switch on the mainline with the hope of finishing the project by the end of March.

Meanwhile Scott was onsite working on the leak in the gray container in the area of the 20-foot extension. Here is a quick summary from Scott:

There has been a roof leak in the gray container where the 40’ container meets the 20’.  It currently drips water on the club’s riding cars and pools on the floor when it rains.  When the 20’ gray container was added to the 40’ one, the roof height was about 2” shorter once the floor was leveled.  To help shed water, a small metal plate was tack welded between them at an angle which was then sealed over.

The old sealant had cracked over time and needed to be replaced.  The old sealant was wire wheel ground off. The new rubberized sealant was troweled over the seam and plate and then a fiberglass mesh pressed into the sealant.  A second layer of sealant was applied over the mesh to create a secure watertight seal along the whole seam.

As we close out 2024 a big thank you to all our members and volunteers who worked throughout the year on so many projects around the railroad. Looking forward to seeing what we complete in 2025.
