Workday produced progress on the “Grandma Line” and repair on the east loop
As we countdown to the last public run day of the year a small crew went to the railroad on Saturday to make sure things are in good shape for our November 9th big event. The work crew consisted of Wes, Kenneth, Scott, and John and took split up and worked on east loop repair and the “Grandma Line”. Wes and Kenneth worked on the east end outer loop inner track which need some attention in several areas. Scott and John worked on the “Grandma Line” by setting forms, bringing buckets of crush and run over, and laying out several panels. John also worked Friday on the container mural by lettering several mural containers. He added Hapag Lloyd and “K” Line, Sea Land, and Maersk. John is taking recommendations for other painted containers on the mural. If you have any real or fake container companies, you would like to see let him know.

11th Anniversary of our Grand Opening
On Saturday, November 2, 2013, marked the opening of the Conyers & Hightower Trail Railroad and the end of a 15-year absence of a permanent railroad for North Georgia Live Steamers to operate. A lot has changed over the years, but one thing has not, and it is the dedication of every member, volunteer, and visitor that has helped make the railroad possible along the way. A big thank you to the City of Conyers and the Georgia International Horse Park for sharing our vision and love of trains. Check out the video below to see what our first day looked like and don’t forget to check out some of our pictures over the years as well. Don’t forget to share on your favorite social media platform to help promote not just the railroad but the hobby.
For everyone who has ever been to our railroad thank you. We look forward to seeing you around the railroad in the near future.

Our 4th Annual Fall meet is a wrap. Thank you to everyone who came and made it a success.
The 2024 Fall meet is in the books and what an exciting weekend the railroad experienced. A big thank you to our onsite coordinator, Wes for making sure everything happened as it needed including overnight security, we could not have done it without all he did throughout the weekend. Another big thank you goes out to Norm and Susan for making sure everyone got fed on Saturday cooking up hamburgers, hot dogs, and more. We had several bring desserts and by the time lunch was over everyone said they ate way too much.

Thank you to Joan, Sherry, and others for taking care of the waiver table and even setting up a small merchandise table for those interested in purchasing t-shirts and more. To our many visitors we hope you had a great time and look forward to seeing you next year. Our visitors came from Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, Mississippi, Louisiana, and more.
As we reached the peak of the meet on Saturday, we had nearly 10 trains operating on the railroad at once which included 7 steam engines and 3 diesels locomotive with a variety of freight and passenger cars rolling around the railroad.

Correction: Fall Meet is finally here. Looking forward to seeing everyone around the railroad this weekend.
It is hard to believe that our 2024 Fall Meet is finally here. We look forward to seeing everyone around the railroad all weekend long and don’t forget we have lunch planned on Saturday. The grill will be hot with hamburgers and hotdogs but if you have something that is a better fit for your diet don’t hesitate to bring it along and we will find a place on the grill for you to cook as well.

A few reminders about the weekend.
Make sure you sign the waiver book at the Blue Tent
While drinks will be available for lunch on Saturday don’t forget to bring your favorite to have throughout the day.
If you have a sweet tooth don’t forget to bring a dessert to share on Saturday.
We plan on having the fire pit going Friday and Saturday night some come out and hang out.
While operating trains make sure you keep an eye on the main grade crossing as we will most likely have vehicle traffic through the weekend.
Parking around the property may get a little tight so here a things to keep in mind:
Please try not to park close to the Breezeway. We need to make sure we have enough room for people to spread out and also so we have an area to set up food on Saturday.
Please make sure that you do not park on the grass driveway loop. We need to make sure that as people unload and pull around that they have a clear path to pull through.
park clear of the grass driveway loop. Efforts will be made between now and Thursday to mark off the area the best way possible.
Please park trailers near the clubhouse & workshop containers.
Don't forget we do have some areas to park to the left of the main gate when you enter the property before crossing over the main grade crossing.
4. Loading/Unloading - If a guest is loading or unloading, please make sure you help with the loader.
5. Safety - As with everything we do around the railroad safety is important. If you see something, say something.
Some scheduling items to keep in mind for this weekend:
Thursday - We will need some members to help with some setup in the morning of the welcome tent which should include the Blue Tent and Waiver book. We also will have at least one or two outside visitors arriving on Thursday so let's make sure they are welcomed.
Friday - Things will pick up with members and visitors so if anyone is able to be onsite in the morning to welcome visitors that would be great. Otherwise come when you can and stay as long as you can. Not sure what the evening plans are at this point but we did have little fire going and we ordered pizza. We will see what the evening holds but should be a good time.
Saturday - This will be the biggest day of the weekend. We don't have an official time for lunch yet but I'm thinking around 11:30 or Noon for those that are trying to plan their hunger. I do expect the railroad to run well into the dark so make sure your train lights work and maybe a light jacket as the evening cools.
Sunday - Cleanup day. Whatever doesn't get put away on Saturday will be taken care of Sunday.
As always, let's have fun and see everyone around the railroad.

Fall Meet Starts Thursday
The Fall Meet is finally here, and the weather is looking great. Work was done on the railroad today to make sure that everything is ready. Some work was done on a couple of yard switches and some track panels in the east loop got regauged.
If you are available to come out Thursday, we could use some help blowing off leaves and picking up sticks off the railroad. Also want to remind everyone that Saturday the club will be providing lunch which will include hamburgers, hot dogs, and sides. The club will also be providing some drinks but please feel free to bring your favorite drink for lunch and your stay at the railroad this weekend as well. We are asking anyone interested in bringing a dessert to share to do so.

Here is some information regarding this weekend's event to keep in mind.
1. Because of limited response to who is coming and available to help volunteer for certain tasks during the meet we ask that everyone keep an eye out for anything that needs to be done and don't assume someone else will take care of it.
2. Unlike years past we will NOT have the Blue welcome tent set up at the gate this year. The welcome tent will be moved down by the Breezeway. We need to make sure that all members and guests sign in each day.

Our 3rd Public Run Day event of the 2024 season is in the books.
What an incredibly beautiful day it was to bring the family out to ride trains this past Saturday. A big shout out to our friends from the Georgia chapter of Operation LifeSaver for coming out and building awareness to railroad grade crossing safety. We saw so many families carrying Operation LifeSaver bags full of goodies throughout the day. A special thanks to all of our club members and other volunteers who came out and made the day such a success. If you missed the day because your favorite college football team was playing don’t feel bad you have one more opportunity to bring the family out on Saturday, November 9th as the railroad closes out the 2024 train ride season. We look forward to seeing everyone around the railroad again soon.

East Loop Repair Complete
A big shout out to Rick, “Bob Jr.”, Wes, Dave L., and Norm for going to the site to repair the east loop culvert washout. The team was able to dig out around the culvert and pack dirt back into the area that had washed out. The crew reset the track and tested running over it a couple of times without any issues. Some additional work may still need to be done but won’t take place until after our run day. A thank you to George, Scott, and Sherry for stopping by to check on the crew and provide the pictures as well.

Emergency Repair of East Loop on Wednesday, October 2nd at 8:30 a.m.
It was discovered that a washout has occurred in the east loop at the location of the culvert under the passenger line. The wash out is several feet deep and will require the area to be dug out and repaired. During the repair we will be installing a second culverts in to help deal with the volume of water that is going through the area along with repairing an extension piece we have on the original culvert that is not directing the water through the culvert properly. Rick, “Bob Jr”, Wes, Norm, and several others will be at the site at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday, October 2nd to work on the repair. If you are available to come out, please do so as early as possible. Without this repair the railroad is not currently operational.

Debris and other updates
What a crazy weather year we have had. The most recent hurricane that came through our region last week just seems to be icing on the cake for many. After the hurricane passed Wayne went to check on the railroad and found everything to be in good shape and at that point the river was high but was not at risk of creating any issues with the railroad.
What a crazy weather year we have had. The most recent hurricane that came through our region last week just seems to be icing on the cake for many. After the hurricane passed Wayne L. went to check on the railroad and found everything to be in good shape and at that point the river was high but was not at risk of creating any issues with the railroad. On Saturday Wes was out to the railroad and took some pictures of the water level and things continue to look ok with the Yellow River not reaching the railroad. By Sunday many of you read the email about John Tuten and how he got hit pretty hard by the hurricane with trees actually hitting his house. He has struggled to find local help but after last night’s email several members volunteered to go out Monday and help remove what every they could to help John and his family. This morning Wes and Scott meet at the railroad and loaded up and headed to South Carolina but before they left Scott sent pictures and information on what he found around the west end of the railroad. Robby checked on Calvin and Vivian who are in the Augusta area just west of John and they are doing well. They lost power but everything else was in good shape.
Back to Scott’s report he reports the west end of the railroad had no visible track damage which is great news. He reports that a lot of leaves and little twigs on the track. He did move a couple of larger limbs that had fall out of the way. However, he did find two large limbs that will need to be taken care of near the bridge coming out of the woods on the inner loop track as you are heading towards what we call the water line. This is in the same area that a tree was removed after our last big storm a few months ago. He did find one major safety issue with a limb that is about 30 feet up in the air dangling that we need to figure out how to get down ahead of our public run day if possible. If anyone has availability on Friday Robby plans to be at the site sometime around 2 p.m. to clean up around the railroad and perform some regular track maintenance on the east loop and two switches on the west end of the yard.
If the storm wasn’t enough, you probably heard about the chemical fire at the BioLab facility in Conyers along I-20 requiring many to shelter in place while the fire is put out and the air quality improves. At this point we do not believe this will impact our public run day on Saturday, but we continue to monitor the situation.
Assuming things continue to improve we also have our club meeting on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Club Meeting and Public Run Day Update
Our next club meeting and public run day will both be on Saturday, October 5th. As we have done the past couple of years the club meeting will be at 11 a.m. with the public run day starting at 1 p.m. We will try and keep the meeting brief so everyone can enjoy lunch and finish getting things ready for the day. Thank you to everyone in advance for helping out during our run days.

Time and date:
When: Thursday, October 24 - Sunday, October 27, 2024
Railroad Gauge(s): 7 1/2 & Gauge 1
Accommodations:
We have limited room for RV’s and trailers onsite however overflow space will be available at the RV parking area located at the Georgia International Horse Park facility which is about a mile down the road. For those wishing to stay in a hotel please visit our website for the latest list of area hotels. Most hotels are within 3 to 5 miles of the railroad along with a lot of great restaurant options.
Visiting Trains:
All locomotive types are welcome, but steam engines are required to have a recent hydro-static test. The test can be completed at the railroad with help from a NGLS.
Loading / Unloading
North Georgia Live Steamers has a hydraulic car lift that has three 20-foot sections of track that can be used at one time.
Email Issue Update
It has come to our attention that many of you may not have received last Friday’s email from Robby personal email talking about last Saturday’s workday plans and other activity around the railroad. For those that did not receive the email here is a portion of what was sent

…The day will be focused on making sure the railroad is ready for our run day in two weeks and to finish painting the inside wall and ceiling of the clubhouse / workshop container. I'm not sure how the grass is but any help to weedeat and possibly cut the grass would also be helpful.
Also don't forget to spread the word about our fall meet.
