Workday produced progress on the “Grandma Line” and repair on the east loop

As we countdown to the last public run day of the year a small crew went to the railroad on Saturday to make sure things are in good shape for our November 9th big event. The work crew consisted of Wes, Kenneth, Scott, and John and took split up and worked on east loop repair and the “Grandma Line”. Wes and Kenneth worked on the east end outer loop inner track which need some attention in several areas. Scott and John worked on the “Grandma Line” by setting forms, bringing buckets of crush and run over, and laying out several panels. John also worked Friday on the container mural by lettering several mural containers. He added Hapag Lloyd and “K” Line, Sea Land, and Maersk. John is taking recommendations for other painted containers on the mural. If you have any real or fake container companies, you would like to see let him know.

Progress on the clubhouse and workshop project during our latest workday.

A small crew made big progress at the site today on the clubhouse and workshop project by finishing painting the walls and ceilings. It is amazing how big the space looks even though it is just the first section.

A small crew made big progress at the site today on the clubhouse and workshop project by finishing painting the walls and ceilings. It is amazing how big the space looks even though it is just the first section. As the paint dry’s we are already planning our next steps on this project which includes installing electrical along the side wall and lights. The hope is this space will have some limited use by the end of the year. Thank you to Wes, Tyler, and team for getting this completed.

We now turn our attention to the month of October as we prepare for our next public run day on Saturday, October 5th and fall meet starting on Thursday, October 24th. We look forward to seeing everyone around the railroad throughout the month of October.

If you have availability to stop by the railroad between now and October 4th, we could use some extra help with making sure the grass is cut, and the property looks its best. For anyone traveling to visit Mid-South or Eagle Point over the next few weeks drive safe and make sure you let everyone know about our fall meet. A flyer is available on our website you can print and hand out.

After months of debate the blue container has now been moved.

After months of debate on how to move the blue container to a new location on the property it is finally done with the help of Wes and his team.

After months of debate on how to move the blue container to a new location on the property. Wes a small team he put together went to the site on Sunday and moved the blue container from the clubhouse and workshop location to the area next to member container three. As many may remember the blue container did not match the structural build of the red containers and would have made it difficult to leverage it as part of one big open space when all the containers where connected. Now that the blue container is moved and container one walls and ceiling are up, we are positioned to really make some major progress over the next six to nine months on the projects. We have to finish painting the walls in container one, install electrical, and make the space usable before we start working on connecting container one and two together. We also need to do some track work so we can get to the container from the railroad. With all that needs to be done we can’t do it without everyone’s help. Be on the lookout for ways to get involved and if anyone knows of a company or individual who is interested in making a donation to help pay for the cost of the project, they can do so online by visiting our project page.

Almost a full workday recap for Saturday, August 3rd

We had a small crew working around the railroad on Saturday with a failed attempt to cut the grass. Let’s just say that grass won over the two riding lawn mowers as the deck belts broke on both of them. After the failed attempt to cut grass, the crew shifted gears and made about a dozen straight panels that will be used for the grandma line.

We had a small crew working around the railroad on Saturday with Wes and Robby trying to cut the grass. Let’s just say that grass won over the two riding lawn mowers as the deck belts broke on both of them. Wes plans on making a second attempt at cutting the grass on Sunday after installing a new belt in his riding lawn mower. A new belt for the club riding lawn mower is on order and should be useable again in about two weeks. After the failed attempt to cut grass Robby and Tyler shifted gears and made about a dozen straight panels that will be used for the grandma line. We did take a break for lunch and our August club meeting.

Don’t forget to check out our calendar for what is coming up including club fun days, meets, and more in the coming weeks and months.

Grandma line workday recap for Saturday, July 13, 2024

What an incredibly hot day unless you were working on the “Grandma” line in the shade. A small crew consisting of John, Brandon, and Robby spent the day working on adding 50 feet to the “Grandma” line as work continues from east to west. The crew took a divide and conquered strategy with each focusing on a certain task of the day’s work. John prepared the forms and delt with the crusher run and gravel that Brandon was bringing over from the gravel pit while Robby worked on installing the track panels. We also had two visitors stop by and joined the club. We look forward to getting to know Bryan and Brooke. Norm also stopped by for lunch and was excited about all of the progress.

Some of you may also remember that earlier in the week a bee’s nest was discovered by the workbench. With help from Wes and John we believe the nest is gone but will continue to monitor over the next week or two to make sure. We will need to clean up the workbench area by clearing all ground debris and other items in order to prevent another ground nest being created.

Our next workday, which is planned for Saturday, July 27th. The plan at this point is to build track panels for the “Grandma” line project and workshop project which will require some help cutting ties, bending rail, and more. We also plan on working on the clubhouse and workshop project. The last few pieces of plywood and insulation needs to be installed and painted. Once completed we can then begin working on the second container, installing the lift, track, and more. More details on this project to follow in the coming days as well.

A few items on the calendar to be aware of includes our August club meeting, Dog Days of Summer Club Fun Day, and various workdays between now and our next public run day in October.

A clear path after a tree is cleared off the mainline

Earlier this week it was discovered that a tree had fallen across the mainline but did not hit the mainline. A request for help went out and a team arrived on Wednesday to clear the railroad just in time for our May 18th public run day. A shout out to Dave L., Norm, and Scott for taking care of the tree removal and allowing trains to pass once again.

Planned workday disrupted by threat of rain that turns into beautiful day with a twist of project planning.

The threat of rain deterred most from going to the site today which had been a planned “Grandma Line” workday, but a few went anyway with the hope the rain would not spoil the day. Well while some areas around Atlanta saw rain the railroad started with the threat of rain but cleared throughout the day and ended up being dry and beautiful.

The crew that did end up at the site included John, Tyler, Norm, and Robby. John actually arrived Friday and did some work setting forms for the “Grandma Line” and painted more on the container mural he’s been working on. The mural is looking great. The crew spent most of the day discussing the clubhouse and workshop project with a focus on the lift and track needed to get items from the railroad to the shop. The crew also looked at the “Grandma Line” and two of our newer riding cars to see what may need to be done to address a slight coupler height difference. More investigation to be done with hope of addressing during the summer months.

We also had club representation at Palmetto Live Steam and Mid-South Live Steamers this weekend during their Spring meets. Looking forward to hearing how the Spring Meets went at each of those railroad. If you plan on going to another railroad this Summer or Fall let us know others in the club may ant to go as well. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the railroad on Saturday, May 11th starting at 8:30 a.m. as we prepare the railroad for our next public run day, which is scheduled for Saturday, May 18th. We will need help making sure the railroad is operational, equipment is ready, grass cut, and more on Saturday. Don’t forget to make your calendar for some upcoming club fun days and workdays. See everyone around the railroad soon.

Grandma Line workday showed a great deal of progress again this past weekend.

With each weekend of work on the “Grandma Line” comes a great deal of progress with each and every day. The project crew, which consisted of John T., Wes, David E., Norm, Gene, and others worked on continuing to backfill dirt against a new retaining wall and laying about 30 feet of track. The project crew will need help in the coming weeks with the building of additional track panels and helping with spreading and compacting of dirt once we get enough dry days more dirt can be brought in. Meanwhile, Norm also came by the railroad today and repaired the club diesel which is now back in operation. Thank you for the quick turn around on the repair.

The project crew, which consisted of John T., Wes, David E., Norm, and Gene, worked on the project and worked on continuing to backfill dirt against a new retaining wall and laying about 30 feet of track. Others where onsite working helping out on this and other projects around the railroad. Here is a small snippet from John T’s post on Facebook with additional details from Saturday’s workday.

Well, Friday evening had two inspectors slither by. Both were dispatched post haste and with malice. I therefore decided to paint instead until morning light. Coast Guard is now finished and the base color for Space Force has been applied. Saturday crew was composed of: Wes, Gene, John T, Dave L, Bob C, Norm, David E, and even Scott made a brief appearance. Bob worked on the club steamer, Norm on the club diesel, Dave replaced a few ties with our plastic samples to alleviate a short on the crossing bell, and the rest worked on the Grandma Line…

The project crew will need help in the coming weeks building additional track panels and helping with spreading and compacting of dirt once we get enough dry days more dirt can be brought in with “Bob”. A continued thank you to everyone who came out this weekend and every weekend we have a workday around the railroad. The next couple of weeks will slow down a little as some of our workers will be traveling to visit other railroads but if you are one of the many that will be staying in the area and are available, we do have a planned “Grandma Line” workday on Saturday, May 4th and another workday on Saturday, May 11th to prepare the railroad for our May public run day. Both workdays will start at 8:30 a.m. If you are free either day, come out and give the crew a hand. As mentioned, our next public run day is also come up on Saturday, May 18th and we will need help from every available member and volunteer.

A carry over from last week’s work around the railroad continued today.

As we get closer to our first public run day of the 2024 season more work continues to take place around the railroad. Today we caught Wes at the railroad painting our display board just outside the fence line. This is one of our early structures at the railroad which tells visitors to the Georgia International Horse Park Steeplechase Grounds about our railroad and not-for-profit organization. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for this Saturday, April 13th from 1 to 4:30 p.m. as the railroad opens for the 2024 season.

Fourth workday of the week and another day of progress on multiple items

The week has been very productive on a number of projects including with the clubhouse and workshop project. Today’s crew painted the newly installed walls along with getting power installed into the container. The crew also worked on moving about several yards of dirt to continue to fill in some low spots in the future “Grandma Line”.

The week has been very productive on a number of projects including with the clubhouse and workshop project. Today’s crew consisted of Wes, John T., Robby, and Norm as they painted the newly installed walls and ceiling along with getting power installed into the container. John was also able to install a switch and indicator light for a future item to be installed at the main grade crossing.

Once the power was completed Wes and Robby took care of bringing in more gravel to the new retaining wall installed a couple of weeks ago in order to bring the ground level up to the railroad, so it wasn’t such a drop off.

Before the crew called it a day, they moved several yards of dirt to the east end of the future “Grandma Line”. Once the dirt settles plans will be made to not only bring in more dirt but prepare to install the first 60 feet of track for the “Grandma Line”. Be on the lookout for help in building track panels.

Our third workday of the week sees more items being taken care of around the railroad.

The third day of our work week saw more progress on a number of items around the railroad including repairs on the club steamer and clubhouse and workshop project. The injectors were returned after being cleaned and the first sixteen feet of wall and ceiling are now installed into the clubhouse and workshop space.

The third day of our work week saw more progress on a number of items around the railroad including repairs on the club steamer and clubhouse and workshop project. Bob C was onsite in the morning and brought back the injectors for the club steamer after taking them home and cleaning them. He also mentioned that the water filter may not have a crack in it after all. He is looking into what is going on but feels it may have been screwed in incorrectly causing the filter not to have a good seal. The clubhouse and workshop project also saw more progress as the crew, which consisted of Wes, Robby, and Norm, finished installing 16 feet of wall and ceiling. The crew is planning on wiring the electrical panel and paint the new walls and ceiling on Friday. If you are free on Friday, the crew could use some extra help and will be starting at 9 a.m.

Don’t forget to join us on Saturday, April 6th for our major workday as we prepare the railroad for our season opener along with our club meeting. The workday portion of the day starts at 8:30 a.m. with our club meeting at 1 p.m. Our Saturday plan is to clean up the property, oil switches, organize containers, add more gravel along the new retaining wall, and more.

  1. Oil all switches.

  2. Cut grass and weed eat around the fence line.

  3. Add additional crusher run and gravel against the new retaining wall near the Nicol bridge.

  4. Pickup all construction items around the railroad.

  5. Inspect track for any repairs needed and perform the repairs

  6. Clean and organize the grey container.

  7. Clean and organize the red container.

  8. Test Signal System (new batteries have been ordered).

  9. Help finish painting the steaming bays.

  10. If you can think of anything else, please feel free to take the project on and let everyone know.

Clubhouse and Workshop makes a step forward during latest work day.

The beginning of the workweek brought progress on the clubhouse and workshop project as Norm, Wes, and Robby began framing the first of many walls in the containers. Once the first wall is completed an electrical panel will be installed and we will have electricity in the container. This will help make future work obviously easier and get us a step closer to having a clubhouse and workshop at the site. A lot of work and money is needed to complete the project, but we are well on our way. The crew will be back at it on Tuesday, April 2nd at 9 a.m. as they continue to work on framing walls and ceilings in the first container.

Unofficial workday produced more progress on preparing the railroad and club steamer for operation.

On Saturday, March 30th we had members out at the railroad with a few items on the to do list to complete. One of the items on the list included testing some of the most recent repairs on the club steamers. The crew was able to get the club steamer out and ran a little bit where they identified a couple of new items that will need to be addressed before the locomotive is operational.

One of the items on the list included testing some of the most recent repairs on the club steamers. The crew was able to get the club steamer out and ran a little bit where they identified a couple of new items that will need to be addressed before the locomotive is operational. One of the new items includes one of the water filters has developed a crack most likely because of water being left in the filter and freezing during the winter months. It was also determined the steam brakes are also in need of some attention as the cylinder is losing a lot of steam when activate. Bob also took the injectors home for cleaning and will be bringing them back in the next week or two. A plan to repair the steam brakes is being discussed. If you are interested in getting involved with the club steamer let us know. No experience necessary just an interested in learning and getting involved.

Meanwhile, fine tuning of the water line track and switches were performed by Robby, Norm, and Gene. The team made an adjustment to the new curved switch by adding longer frog guards and regauged and leveled a couple of the original switches on the mainline. They also worked on leveling and ballasting some other areas of the west end inner loop. Ethel also stopped by and worked on cleaning up the picnic tables under the Breeseway. She reports much more cleaning is needed.
